Monograph on the 95th anniversary of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute: current topics of research

Research at the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute is conducted by a large team of scientists and experts in different fields related to marine ecosystems and the fishing industry. The results of analyses are usually published in English-language journals, gaining recognition in the international group of researchers of certain issues. At the same time, as the National Research Institute responsible for the Multi-annual Programme of Fisheries Data Collection, and through performing a number of other research and development activities, we create hundreds of opinions, expertise and elaborations for government bodies, public entities, non-governmental organizations and industry throughout the year. None of the above sources of information serve for a broader audience in Poland that is interested in reliable, verified scientific knowledge on the Baltic Sea and the fisheries sector in Poland. That is why, on the 95th anniversary of the NMFRI, it is my pleasure to present you volumes containing articles on the three main sections of current research topics, for creation of which I have invited our best experts.

VOLUME I – Fish resources and the fisheries – contains works presenting methodological basis of inference about the dynamics of the most important Baltic fish stocks, their distribution, replenishment and exploitation. Such analyses are based on the results of repeated monitoring of the marine environment with the significant impact of inflows from the North Sea, the results of research cruises internationally coordinated and conducted by all the Baltic States, determining the composition of catches and economic results of the Polish fisheries. The works presenting management plans for the European eel, the history of salmonid fish restocking and the analysis of intensively developing in recent decades cod recreational fisheries have also been presented here.

VOLUME II – Environmental status of the southern Baltic – presents a selection of research results from a wide range of environmental analysis of the Baltic Sea performed at the NMFRI. Eutrophication is considered to be the most serious problem of the Baltic Sea, for which, according to HELCOM, Poland still bears the greatest responsibility by introducing loads of nutrients from agricultural fertilizers through waters of the Vistula and the Oder. Comprehensive analysis of the data and model parameters undermines this thesis. In this volume works on other parameters, i.e. environmental (oxygen conditions, salinity), biological (food web, parasites) and anthropogenic (persistent organic pollutants) that affect the functioning of the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, or are considered to be dangerous (chemical munitions), are also presented.

VOLUME III – Fish products and fish processing – presents works on the issues relating to this fisheries sector, taking into account the quality and safety of raw materials, in particular pelagic fish from the Baltic Sea, which can be processed to a greater extent for consumption purposes. Consumer demand considerably influences the possibility of increased production. Consumers are sometimes misled by media reports of undesirable substances in fish products. For this reason, in the monograph two papers on the results of chemical analyses of fish and fish products available on the Polish market have been presented. The study cycle is complemented by the analysis of the functioning of the Baltic fish supply chain, as well as presentations of the untapped potential of the circular economy, using waste materials for further production.
