A ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute was held under the honorary patronage of the the Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Waterways Marek Gróbarczyk on 16th June 2016 to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Marine Fisheries Research in Poland as well as the 1921-2016 Jubilee of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
In the first part of the meeting, the Chairman of the Scientific Council, Prof. Jan Horbowy greeted the guests. Deputy Voivode of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Mariusz Łuczyk handed in the state decorations to the awarded, distinguished employees of the NMFRI. The distinctions were awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland. Then, the Deputy Mayor of Gdynia, Katarzyna Gruszecka-Spychała and a member of the City Council Marcin Wołek handed in a congratulatory address of the Mayor of Gdynia and the 25th anniversary of the Gdynia Local Government Medal.
The Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal was handed in during the celebration. Prof. Tomasz Linkowski was this year’s winner. He was awarded for extraordinary scientific achievements and for adding to the prestige of the Institute.
The lecture The Position of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute in the Perspective of the Marine Science in Poland by Prof. Marcin Węsławski was the next point on the agenda.
The second part began with the speech by the Director of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Waterways, Dr. Janusz Wrona, who thanked the Institute for a long cooperation in kind words.
Then, Director of the NMFRI, Dr. Emil Kuzebski gave a presentation on the past, present and future development perspectives of the Institute.
The lecture Poland and the United States Partnering in Sustaining Fisheries in Large Marine Ecosystems by Dr Kenneth Sherman (NOAA) was presented by Dr. Zbigniew Karnicki, as Dr. Sherman could not come to Gdynia.
The ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the NMFRI ended with occasional speeches by the representatives of Hel, Jastarnia, Władysławowo, Puck, scientific institutes, universities as well as fisheries organisations and institutions connected with fishing. “Another 95 successful years” were the most frequently repeated wishes.
On 17th June 2016, the Management of the Institute met all its employees. It had a friendly, family-like atmosphere and ended with taking a picture together. The photograph will be a wonderful memento to all of us.
