Reporting the damage caused by seals – appeal to fishermen

The autumn and winter season, which is favourable for catching salmonidae species, is also abundant in interactions between the fisheries and seals. Tens of damaged sea trout, salmon and cod are the effect of such encounters. The issue is widely known among both fishermen and scientists. Everyone is aware of the problem as well as of the fact that it is growing, however if the damage caused by seals is not reported, it is impossible to define the problem. Due to a low proportion of the interactions reported to the NMFRI, the data on the amount of losses as well as their locations (fishing squares) is still unavailable. Therefore, the NMFRI is asking the fishery environment to report losses caused by seals to both catches and tools systematically and thoroughly.

The link below contains the necessary data, which should be included in the report on the losses cause by seals.

The losses caused by seals can also be included in the monthly catch report, the catch logbook or the electronic catch logbook.

The above-mentioned data will be very helpful in the discussion on the establishment of a compensation system for the fishermen’s losses caused by seals.
