The fifth national meeting of scientists engaged in marine research took place in Słupsk. The 5th Scientific Conference of Polish Marine Researchers, organized by the Marine Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Pomerania in Słupsk, was held on June 22–24, 2026. During the session devoted to marine biology in its broadest sense, researchers from the NMFRI presented three papers and one scientific poster. The delegation, consisting of Dr. Agnieszka Szkudlarek-Pawełczyk, M.Eng. Agnieszka Góra, Karolina Jonko-Sobuś, M.Sc., and M.Eng. Marcin Białowąs, presented research issues from various scientific projects conducted by our Institute.

Dr. Agnieszka Szkudlarek-Pawełczyk from the NMFRI Research Station in Świnoujście presented the results of studies on the ichthyoplankton of the Pomeranian Bay in 2024–2025, with particular emphasis on the early developmental stages of spring-spawning herring. Representatives from the Department of Food and Environmental Chemistry presented preliminary results of research on the diet of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua): M.Eng. Agnieszka Góra discussed the role of fatty acids in assessing the status of commercially important fish stocks, using cod as an example, Karolina Jonko-Sobuś, M.Sc., presented the potential applications of near-infrared spectroscopy in studying fish dietary components during the poster session – “Infrared Spectroscopy: One Technique, Many Applications.”

During the lecture session dedicated to young scientists, M.Eng. Marcin Białowąs from the Department of Fisheries Oceanography and Marine Ecology, gave a presentation entitled “Implementation of NMFRI spectroscopy (MIR/FTIR) methods for the qualitative analysis of environmental microplastics.”

The conference provided an interdisciplinary perspective on the subject of our research and facilitated the exchange of ideas, insights, and comments. It served as a catalyst for future meetings that could lead to research collaboration. We were able to see what others are working on and the challenges they face beyond our narrow specialization. This is extremely valuable, as the organizers also emphasized.
