HELCOM awarded the Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal

We are proud to announce that this year’s recipient of the Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal is the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – the intergovernmental organization dedicated to the protection of the marine environment of the Baltic Sea.

The Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal is a prestigious distinction awarded for outstanding scientific and organizational achievements in the fields of biology, ecology, and fisheries, as well as for significant contributions to the promotion of marine science. The Medal is awarded to individuals and institutions, both Polish and international, based on nominations reviewed by the Medal Chapter, which consists of previous laureates (individuals only), the Chair of the Scientific Council, and the Director of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute.

The award ceremony took place on 28 May this year in Gdynia. The Medal was received on behalf of HELCOM by the organization’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Rüdiger Strempel, who delivered a lecture entitled “Heavy Seas: science-based regional policy making for a healthy Baltic Sea.”

HELCOM was recognized by the Chapter for its long-standing and consistent efforts to protect the resources and ecosystem of the Baltic Sea and for its vital role in shaping science-based regional environmental policy.
