The INTERREG South Baltic Program project: “Cross-border development and transfer of innovative and sustainable aquaculture” (aka. InnoAquaTech) for which BioCon Valley GmbH is a lead partner, gathers 20 research, technology and development partners and associated partners from 4 countries in the South Baltic Region for a Kick Off seminar in Rostock.
On the 20th and 21st October 20 participants from the 7 partner organisations, as well as the Program Joint Secretariat from Gdansk, met for the first time at the InnoAquaTech Kick Off, held at the Aquaculture and Sea Ranching faculty of the University of Rostock, to discuss the aims and plan the activities within the project.
Protein sourced from aquaculture has been identified as one of the greatest potential areas of growth in the coming decades and the aim of project InnoAquaTech is to determine the potential of deploying diverse innovative aquaculture technologies to increase and optimize the sustainable production of aquatic protein in the South Baltic Region.
The project hopes to strengthen the dialogue with the SMEs in the region’s aquaculture branch about innovative production methods with a specific focus on the development of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
The main outputs of the project will be an analysis of aquaculture technologies and local adaptations in the South Baltic, a web-based decision support tool for investors, a business plan for the creation of a South Baltic aquaculture alliance, financial support guideline and innovation check for SMEs and 4 regional pilots.
The 4 pilots involve feasibility reports on innovative aquaponics systems in Germany and Denmark, the evaluation of potential crustacean production in RAS in Poland and a prototype and feasibility study of geothermal RAS shrimp production in Lithuania.
The project is co-funded by the INTERREG South Baltic Program.
