On 9 May 2019, the Conference on the occasion of 45 years of NOAA and NMFRI scientific cooperation in fisheries ecology (1974-2019) took place at the Institute. The ceremony was opened by the director of the NMFRI, Dr. Piotr Margoński, who stressed the importance of a contract signed 45 years ago, which gave extraordinary opportunities for strategic cooperation with American institutes and scientific development. Director Margoński thanked all the employees of the NMFRI Plankton Sorting and Identification Center for their extremely hard work and professionalism. The Center is a team with unique, worldwide competence in the determination of planktonic organisms. Special thanks were sent to Dr. Kenneth Sherman (NOAA) for his extraordinary persistence and perseverance in supporting this cooperation. Dr. Ken Sherman presented the backstage of the first contract and its history.
During the celebration, Dr. Jonathan A. Hare (Director of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, NOAA) received the Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal. The Medal and Diploma were given by Prof. Zygmunt Klusek, Chairman of the NMFRI Scientific Council, and director Piotr Margoński.
After the break, there were two sessions with presentations on zooplankton research, the potential of these studies in the Arctic and joint US-Polish research on the seas and atmosphere.
Over one hundred people participated in the conference.
