On 15th December, a scientific conference which summed up the project Restitution of key elements of the inner Puck Bay ecosystem was held at the Gdynia Aquarium.
The conference was attended by the representatives of the project’s beneficiary – the Inter-commune Association for the Bay of Puck as well as the scientific institutions involved in the project: the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute, the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the representatives of Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk, as well as the local government of Puck and Władysłałowo.
Zostera marina is a type of seagrass. It is also a colloquial name of the project, whose goal was to help the Bay of Puck in the natural process of recovery. The Inter-commune Association for the Bay of Puck was the initiator of the project. The project was focused on three elements: underwater seagrass meadows, reeds of the Hel Peninsula and fish predators. Not all of the initial assumptions turned out to be practicable. The project began in 2010 and finished in 2015. It had to be changed multiple times, as the monitoring of the Bay of Puck brought new knowledge. However, the strategic goal was the most important. Coordination Center for Environmental Projects turned out to be a partner, which shared this goal.
Increasing the environmental awareness, especially among the local community, was an important element of the project. Only knowledge and responsibility for our actions can bring the Bay of Puck a long-term change for the better.
