In November, scientists of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, IOW) announced on their website that between 14th and 22nd November 2015 there was another inflow.
The first data on this occurrence were acquired from the automatic measurement station Darss Sill, which is a part of MRNET. As our colleagues from the IOW report, it is provisionally estimated to be 76 km3 of water, which brought about 1.4 Gt of salt into the Baltic Sea. To compare, the IOW has estimated that the inflow at the end of last year brought about 4 Gt of salt in 198 km3 of water.
The inflow’s significance for “refreshing” the Baltic Sea will be estimated based on the results collected during research cruises conducted by the Baltic States. The nearest cruise of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute is planned for February.
