EFARO General Assembly – Dr. Piotr Margoński Elected President for Another Term

The EFARO General Assembly took place this year on 21–22 May in Brussels.
The European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Organisation (EFARO) is an association of directors of European research institutes conducting marine fisheries and aquaculture research. EFARO was established in 1989 and currently brings together 24 institutes from 19 European countries.
Reports from the Management Board and the Financial Report were presented and discussed. A special session was held on the cooperation between EFARO and ICES, with the participation of Carl O’Brien, President of ICES.
Over the past year, the first meeting of the Working Group on Welfare in Aquaculture and Fisheries (WG-WAF) was held, as well as a webinar on European eel management plans. Two preparatory online meetings between EFARO and DG MARE also took place, focusing on cooperation among EFARO, DG MARE, and ICES.
A key element of EFARO’s annual meetings is the exchange of views and discussions with representatives of the European Commission. This year, representatives from DG MARE, DG ENV, and DG RTD attended the meeting. They presented the current status of the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy Regulation, upcoming plans for funding scientific projects under Horizon Europe, and the principles of the new Nature Restoration Regulation, which requires EU Member States to prepare Restoration Plans.
Piotr Margoński was elected President of EFARO for another two-year term.
