Scholarship in an NCN-funded project WEAVE-UNISONO

Employer:

Department of Fisheries Oceanography and Marine Ecology, National Marine Fisheries Research Institute

Job position:

NCN scholarship fellow

Funding:

An NCN-funded project „How complex are aquatic microbial food webs? Unveiling the trophic role of middle-sized heterotrophic flagellates in freshwater and brackish habitats”.

Call:

WEAVE-UNISONO (international bi- and trilateral projects)

Job description:

The main scope of the project is to understand the role of middle-sized, omnivorous heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in aquatic microbial food webs. The project is an international collaboration with scientists from Czechia (Prof. Karel Šimek, dr Indranil Mukherjee), Germany (Prof. Kenneth Dumack) and Switzerland (Prof. Tomasch Posch). The successful candidate will participate in the research tasks aiming at :

  1. comparison of responses of natural communities of bacterivorous and omnivorous/predatory heterotrophic nanoflagellates to experimental food web manipulations in contrasting seasons in Římov reservoir (Czechia) and Baltic Sea;
  2. description of seasonal changes in microbial eukaryotic community composition in the Baltic Sea;
  3. estimating seasonal changes in grazing rates and food preference of protists in the Baltic Sea;
  4. description of dynamics and growth potential of fast-growing omnivorous/predatory HNF under contrasting environmental scenarios;
  5. cultivation and description of novel species of omnivorous/predatory HNF from experimental enrichments and environmental samples.

The successful candidate will learn to conduct manipulation experiments, collect samples of aquatic microorganisms and molecular methods used in microbial ecology (sequencing, CARD-FISH). The planned activities will include preparation and conducting the manipulation experiments, laboratory analysis, statistical analysis, interpretation of data, writing scientific articles and presenting the results at conferences.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor or master degree in oceanography, biology, ecology or similar (candidates who will obtain the degree in 2022 will be considered);
  2. Basic knowledge in the ecology of aquatic environments and microorganisms;
