We are pleased to announce that Dr. Katarzyna Nadolna-Ałtyn from the Department of Fisheries Resources at NMFRI has been elected Chair of the ICES Working Group on Baltic Salmon and Trout Assessment (ICES WGBAST). For the current term, she will serve in this capacity together with Katarina Magnusson, SLU, Sweden (co-chairman).
The task of the ICES WGBAST is to annually determine the status of salmon in the Gulf of Bothnia and the Main Basin (ICES subarea 22-31), the Gulf of Finland (ICES subarea 32), as well as sea trout in the Baltic Sea (ICES subarea 22-32). Based on the information obtained, the working group prepares proposals for advice on the management of these resources. Representatives of almost all Baltic countries participate in the work of the ICES WGBAST group (at present, the participation of Russian representatives is suspended). During the deliberations, all aspects that may be relevant to the status of the resource from spawning efficiency, smolt and spawner abundance in individual management units, through the impact of commercial and recreational fishing, marine mammals or diseases are discussed.
