The 51st WEFTA – West European Fish Technologists` Association conference was held in Copenhagen from 16-20/10/2023, with the theme “Sustainable use of water resources – changing the way we view seafood.” The conference was attended by more than 120 scientists representing scientific units from 21 European countries and Japan. During the conference, more than 80 scientific papers were delivered and more than 30 posters were presented.
The conference, organized by the Danish Technical University (DTU) of Denmark, consisted of 6 thematic sessions:
- Sustainable aquaculture and its relationship to aquatic food quality;
- Micro/macroalgae and their applications in food;
- By-products for food and non-food applications to achieve waste-free production;
- Consumer attitudes, social challenges, and fisheries products;
- Security and Authenticity;
- Processing and quality of seafood (translated by the author).
As part of the session on consumer attitudes and social challenges, Dr. Olga Szulecka from the NMFRI presented a paper discussing the results of the Low-value/20 project: “Consumers’ perceptions of low-value cyprinid fish and products from them” by O. Szulecka and T. Kulikowski. The presentation discussed the results of consumer research on perceptions of low-value cyprinid fish and products from them, and related them to further work carried out in the project. The results of the paper interested the conference participants, especially those from the Baltic Sea countries, where there are similar problems in the use of small carp fish.
Dr. Eng. Olga Szulecka also participated, as a representative of Poland, in a meeting of national representatives of WEFTA, and had the opportunity to meet with representatives of Eurofish, ministries of agriculture of European countries and fish processing entities.
