The annual science conference of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES ASC) was held at the conference center of the Glasshouse in Gateshead, UK, from 09-12.09.2024.
The event was attended by 773 participants from around the world, including NMFRI-PIB representatives. During the lectures, which were held simultaneously in 5 halls, a total of more than 400 scientific presentations were given. In addition, research results were presented in 125 posters. In addition, 73 ICES groups presented the scope of their work in the form of posters. The presentations were grouped into 18 thematic sessions on climate change, the impact of wind farms or the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research. The conference’s themes also emphasized the need to include the human factor in ongoing research and projects.

During the session “Scientific Progress under the ICES Scientific Plan,” Dr. Szymon Smolinski presented a paper entitled “Synchronous decline in mean individual weights among pelagic fish stocks of the Baltic Sea (photo by Katarzyna Nadolna-Ałtyn).
NMFRI-PIB scientists also participated in the conference as co-organizers.

Our delegates during the ASC also participated in steering and working group meetings (Dr. K. Nadolna-Altyn in the Steering Group on Fishery Resources (ICES FRSG), Working Group on Science in Support of Conservation, Recovery and Management of Diadromous Species (WGDIAD); Dr. T. Wodzinowski co-moderated a meeting on developing cooperation with the Working Group on Operational oceanographic products for fisheries and Environment (ICES WGOOFE)). In addition, Dr. Szymon Smolinski attended a meeting of the editorial board of the ICES Journal of Marine Science and participated in a question-and-answer session about the journal. A meeting of the ICES Bureau was also held during the conference, which was attended by Dr. Piotr Margoński, ICES Vice President.
Next year’s ICES ASC conference will be held September 15-18, 2025 in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
