Dr. Szymon Smoliński among the Björn Carlsons Baltic Fellows

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Szymon Smoliński from the NMFRI Department of Fisheries Resources has been included in the honoured group of young scientists supporting the Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse.

The Björn Carlsons Baltic Fellows consist of eleven young scientists from Sweden and eleven from the other Baltic countries. Poland is represented by Dr. Szymon Smoliński from the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute and Dr. Monika Kędra, Professor at the Institute of Oceanology PAS in Sopot.

The aim of the scientists’ collaboration is to improve the state of the Baltic by, among other things, making politicians and decision-makers aware of the urgent need for action and indicating what needs to be done to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea and its resources.

The Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse foundation, also known as BalticSea2020, was founded in 2005. In the 15 years since its establishment, it has funded activities and research projects that have deepened the understanding of the Baltic Sea and its catchment area. The foundation has influenced the EU legislation on fisheries and agriculture, and has played a key role in the implementation of many important scientific studies and the publication of their results. In addition, the NMFRI has co-implemented in 2016–2018 a project funded by the foundation – the TABACOD research project provided information on cod migration, as well as data on the growth rates of fish of this species (more: https://mir.gdynia.pl/launch-of-the-project-tabacod-tagging-baltic-cod/?lang=en ).

Since 2022, the foundation has been awarding a special prize, the so-called Baltic Nobel Prize, for research that has made a valuable contribution to improving the Baltic Sea environment. Work is currently underway to select the winner of this prestigious award of SEK 3 million. This year’s winner of the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris will be announced at an award ceremony on 26 September at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm.
